Warning over visa scam

An immigration scam was busted and police cautioned the public to be wary of transacting immigration applications through the internet. Foreigners residing in NSW or immigrants who wanted to secure visas for their kin are advised to deal only with legitimate agencies providing immigration services. Two men are expected to appear in court following an investigation linked to an alleged immigration fraud. Police will allege that in May this year, a 19-year-old Ultimo woman responded to an internet advertisement for the purpose of obtaining a permanent residency visa.It is further alleged the woman met with two men believing they were migration agents and handed over a substantial amount of cash. She met the pair on a second occasion, again handing over money believing the agents to be legitimate.Last month the woman discovered the men were allegedly not genuine agents and, when contacted by the men to produce further money, she contacted police.Following an investigation by City Central detectives, two Zetland men aged 21 and 22 were arrested and each charged with obtain money by deception. The pair was granted conditional bail and are expected to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on 17 August.City Central Crime Manager, Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen Day, is encouraging members of the public who are seeking advice in relation to immigration issues to be cautious.“I would strongly urge those seeking advice in regards to immigration matters to be sure they use reputable companies.“It appears there are people purporting to be migration agents targeting members of the community attempting to obtain visas and permanent residency,” he said.“We are encouraging anyone with information about immigration scams to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. All information will be treated with the strictest of confidence,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Day.
