Oz Pinoys pay tribute to Cory
The news spread quickly on the early hours of August 1st. Filipino-Australians in New South Wales were soon taken with the news that the former president Corazon Aquino had died. Tributes poured in by way of calls, bloggers forum, and many Filipino-Aussies and organisations posted messages of sympathy and grief in dedicated websites. “We all knew she was battling cancer pero nakakagulat pa rin (it still came as a shock). Somehow we feel sad because we will miss a figure, a leader back home, na pagkakatiwalaan mo (whom you can trust),” said Buddy F., resident of Rooty Hill. Philippine Community Council-New South Wales president Ronaldo Villaver said he would miss Cory, a president whom he had the chance to work with during Aquino’s incumbency. “She played a vital role in shifting the Philippines into democratic rule through the peaceful “People Power Movement”. Likewise, Mrs. Aquino’s moral leadership, courage and determination are an inspiration to us all,” Villaver said. “I had the opportunity of serving the Aquino presidency and one her significant social justice programs was the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) which benefited thousands of Filipinos nationwide,” Villaver said.A website (www.message-of-condolences.filolife.com) has been receiving posts of sympathies from organisations and individuals.“May her memories live forever and continue to inspire all Filipinos to serve the country with great passion, sacrifice and love. She has indeed left us with an indelible mark of courage, faith, inspiration and hope of prosperity for our country,” stated an entry from Jhun Salazar on behalf of the Visayan Association of Australia, Inc.“From a humble, loving wife and a devoted mother, she has transformed herself into a beacon of strength and courage for the oppressed and destitute and single-handedly gave hope to a nation wallowing in fear,” read an entry from Alric Bulseco, president of the Ateneo Alumni Association of Australia.“We will remember her not only because she led the Filipino at EDSA in 1986. But I do admire her for her simplicity when she held the position as president. She was not power-hungry,” said Melanie Fernandez of Hornsby.[VISIT www.message-of-condolences.filolife.com]
