Sports newsPinoy boxers slug it out in Australia TWO PINOY boxers scored impressive wins in different weight divisions when they clashed against foes in two of a seven-fight boxing championship matches at The Cube in Campbelltown on July 24. Kidapawan boy Ernie Gonzales took the first win in the opening match when he scored a decision against Kane Buckley in the featherweight division. The boxing fans, packed at the Cube cheered loudly for another Pinoy, Ranee Ganoy, who battled a bruising fast-paced slugfest with Heri Andriyanto in the light welterweight division. Ganoy, one of the most experienced boxers in the line-up, scored a unanimous decision over his opponent. A third Pinoy, Ray Anton Olarte also featured in an exciting match against Lenny Zappavigna in the light welterweight. Olarte came out strong in the last three rounds but he was already way below in points to lose the match to the more favoured and younger Lenny. The night’s matches climaxed with the fight between crowd favourite ‘Deadly’ Rob Medley and Indonesian Aswin Cabuy for the interim IBF Australasian light middleweight title. Medley won in a referee-stops-fight decision in the rather lopsided match. The Pinoy boxers were happy with their wins. “Mahirap din pero basta kailangan talagang ensayo lang,” Gonzales said in a chat with newsPinoy. “ Pero tiyaga-tiyaga lang,” said Ernie, a newcomer to boxing. He is set to fight anew in Blacktown this month. A few Pinoy fans watched the match. But some were disappointed because the fight between the seeded Danilo Lerio and Hussein Hussein had been called off. Kidapawan's Ernie Gonzales (right) with opponent Kane Buckley pose for newsPinoy.
