Glory days for pool, boxing

The past month was a bright season for Philippine sports as Filipinos romped triumphantly in the global boxing and billiards scene. Just as the country was recovering from mourning the demises of Tita Cory, Nonito Donaire blasted his Panamanian opponent, Rafael Concepcion, to win the WBA superflyweight crown. The victory of Donaire only proved that the Philippines has more talents to offer in the world of boxing apart from icon Manny Pacquiao. But even before one could relish the sweet victory of Donaire and a few other boxers after him, the good news switched to pool. The Philippines biggest names - Efren 'Bata' Reyes and Francisco Django Bustamante took the World Cup of Pool. They beat the German team of Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann confirming the Pinoys' image as giants in world pool. Bata and Django practically repeated their 2006 feat when they first won the World Cup beating a shocked Team USA. The Philippines made a strong finish in the World Cup '09 with Ronato Alcano and Dennis Orcollo in the semis. Before facing the Germans, Bata and Django beat teams from China, Russia, Qatar, Italy and England. As if it was luck season for the Philippines, more triumphs followed. It was back to boxing and the prize was the WBO superflyweight crown. "Marvelous" Marvin Sonsona proved a real marvel when he beat Puerto Rican Jose Lopez at the bout in Canada. Sonsona, onlyh 19, became one of the youngest Pinoy champions ever. On his first fight outside the Philippines he surprised many when he knocked out Lopez on the fourth round, Sonsona eventually won by a unanimous decision. The Pinoys are making waves in the boxing arena with other boxers like Donnie Nietes and Brian Villoria securing their hold in their international divisions. But just a week after Sonsona's win, media was abuzz with the victory of another Pinoy boxer - though actually a Fil-Am, and actually a Pinay. Twenty-nine year old Ana Julaton became the first Filipina ever to win a boxing title. Dubbed the "Hurrican", Ana displayed speed and precision punching to beat boxing sensation Kelsey "Road Warrior" Jeffries in California to win the IBA super bantamweight title. Boxing afficionados described Ana as someone who could punch 'like a guy'.Ana had been an active boxer for some time and had trained previously with coaches like Freddie Roach and Nonito Donaire the Senior.
